P for Shy

I have discovered that I'm shy..........I'll go take a walk round the park while you stop laughing
...
...
...
...

Ok. That should've been enough. So I'm shy. I've seen signs of it all my life now. All those stage shows I've never auditioned for cause I'm shy of facing the audience. The alternate theory is that I did act as the "ice cream man" in my class 2 play where I was traumatised by the whooping beard and mustache they drew on my face and that ended my acting career. Very creative dialogue mine was..."Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream for sale. Orange bar. Chocolate Ice. Softies for sale" I think that ended my singing career too

Sign 2 is how I'm shy of talking in public, ie, office meetings. I guess being stupid doesn't quite help this cause and my biggest fear is that people would discover this truth about me so I'm shy to expose it

Sign 3 is how 90% of the people who meet me for the first time think I'm a supreme snobbish bitch. Cause I'm too shy to make conversation with them. So yesterday I went to this card party and I swear I prayed, almost out loud, that some big vulture would swoop me up and fly me away...

What the hell is with me? I'm 27, educated, need to make presentations by way of profession and here I am all tongue tied in the middle of a party, stammering, stuttering and studying the marble flooring.....

So that just about establishes it. I'm shy. Cotton fills my mouth. Colour floods my cheeks. And my heart goes for a trip to Mars. But strangely all this falls to bits when I'm surrounded by my mad friends. Who have this catalysing effect on me and my mouth automatically opens up to let out a hard core punju-tam accent and I don't stop till someone grabs my neck and says "ENOUGH". And now my friends are all set to start visiting next month and I'm doing everything I can to get my vocal cords in shape. Ohhhhh I'm so excited!!! I love this time of the year! Come on over people! Time to grab a gab!

Oh and what's with the title?

The niece calls up yesterday and my mom decides to humour her...
"Nani, my friend is coming"
"Really? Who?"
"Tia"
"Mia??"
"Tia"
"Jia?"
"Tia Nani Tia Tia"
"Ria?"
"Tia! B for Bird. B for Tia"

Hence...P for pencil....P for shy....

Oh and since we're on the subject of the niece, today she saw the Ravans in the park and tells her mom "Oh look. There are 2 Rakhi Sawants". What made her think Ravan and Rakhi Sawant were the same thing I'm not sure but insightful little girl she huh?

i keep telling people the same thing...i am shy too
now i am not tryin to make conversation here...but in parties n get togethers where i donot know people...i usually dont go
but then right now i have the independence of being a student n therefore not having many parties to attend (btw what is a card party)

as for shyness...i am scared of public speaking...but then we had this course on communication...n i was flooded by compliments on composure n confidence on the stage :D (ha ha something to boast bout eh?)

but then shyness is not bad...ok..its not THAT bad...is it?

You aint shy. You have stage fright or are just too self-conscious.

Take up a public speaking class. Or simply, end up at all these partys and meetings n all DRUNK. This way you wont care!

I think your niece might be onto something with that Rakhi Sawant thing!

lol!
that snippet on the title reminds of my hostel days when a junior being ragged was asked to sing a song starting with "La", and he started with "Lal-lal hoton pay gori kiska...". He as then asked to sing a song starting with "Ma", and he started "Lal-lal hoton pay gori kiska...". Then with "Pa", and still the same! :)

and while we are at shyness, I am not at all fond of facing audience, but had the best of the experience when I did my public speaking after the comm course!

And go to parties (gatecrash even) and talk to as many new people as you can.

Easier said than done.

you know what... i am not saying this out of induction but yes, in reply to this post, I can say,"me too".
i am terrible with new aquaintances, parties with new people (i think tht's why i am not invited more often than not), and to top it all... i am a DISASTER on fone, even with best of friends(okay... tht may not have anything to do with my shyness, but still)
And to contradict the above claimed personal trait, one can use the fact that I have been on stage 10 times and acted in 3 self-made short films.

Well, at least you're not shy where it really counts, so it doesn't matter...

But really?! You're SHY?!!!! Oh and yes, I do relate to how people think of shy people as a snobbish b*tch - I get that all the time! Because I'm too tongue-tied to go upto a stranger and start talking to them suddenly! But I'm sure you already knew that.

Cool said...

i know where all this shyness has come!! did some people called you shy when you went to meet them??

Anonymous said...

Hi, just came across your blog randomly, you've got some really funny posts. Loved the Rakhi/Ravan thing.

Anyways, I always come off as a snobbish bitch because not only am I ultra shy, my natural look is one of anger. I'm not angry but that's just the way my mouth is positioned, I always looks mad/sad unless I consiously put a smile on, which after a while is just plain tiring. I get all flushed when I talk to people, even just a salesclerk or a colleague, and the worst thing is that for some reason my eyes tear up! soooo embarassing! and with friends i'm soooo talkative and loud, i hate it, i really need to work on changing but just thought i'd let you knw, you're not alone!!!

Re. Sign 2- In meetings, I usually follow the principle: "Better be quiet and have people think you are stupid, than opening your mouth and removing all doubt" (?Mark Twain, ?Oscar Wilde?)

I don't think keeping quiet in meetings is such a bad thing. The world is full of people that talk at meetings to make their presence felt.

Over the years, I have found following this principle, that people listen to you more when you do eventually talk.

Also, if you are genuinely shy, then the previous suggestion of joining the local Toastmasters club is definitely worth it. I can personally vouch for it.

find it hard to believe that ur shy....normally those who are shy are afirasd of expressing themsleves on such a public forum as this...

i have had my dhare of jitters when it comes to stage performances...bu the one thing that keeps me going is when i tell myself that..." We are all human..we could say stupid things..but life gives us a secnd chance..so what happens today is mostly forgotten tomorrow..."
hope that helps

Zee- Toastmasters is a club you join, like Rotary or Lions. The difference is that this one is focused on developing your speaking skills.

Here's their website:
http://www.toastmasters.org/

Here's a list of their Delhi clubs:
http://www.toastmasters.org/websiteApps/searchresults.asp?Country=India&State=&City=New%20Delhi
if the URL above gets cut off, their website has a club finder where you can search by country. There are 4 clubs in Delhi.

Like I said earlier, it did make a big difference to me. I was never shy, but I did have stage-fright - there is a difference.

TM helped me overcome the stage-fright.

Bhel Puri & Seekh Kabab said...

@cm-chap, zee- I think cm-chap used 'geek' in the best sense of the word; i.e. as someone who is totally into a particular field of study.

Btw, it is a misconception that all marketers are extroverts. There are several aspects of marketing, like marketing research, that attract introverts.

Having said that, I still don't think zee is one. She is just passing through an identity crisis. ;-)

Firstly - awesome niece you have there :)

Just reading your blog I'd have found it hard to believe you're shy - but then I've been there, done that too. I go one step further and aim for MPD though. I either talk too much and end up telling a stranger I just met about my first day of school or seem extremely "rude" and stick to mono-syllables. And naturally I pick the wrong person both times :)

Recipe for RowanPainkym

3 shots apple schnapps

1 shot absinthe

2 shots Absolut

1 dash apple juice

1 shot lemon vodka

1/4 lemonade

Add the apple schnapps to the absinthe then add the absolute, add everything else, and give it a good shake.

Serve on ice with sherbet round the rim of the glass!and say goodbye to shyness...

well that will stop ya from being self conscious... which happens to be the root of all shyness related delirium..

if you want another long lasting effect, learn Slasa or Bachata...trust me that works ;) but then you might have to drink the cocktail before ya go for the classes.... *sigh*
